What’s your Imprint?

‘Tis the season for giving to others and inevitably receiving; which part of this we place more emphasis on, is important in so many ways. And it will undoubtedly influence those closest to us on a personal level.

Throughout the year it is important to set a good example for the young and impressionable. But especially during this time, when there is so much emphasis on gift giving and receiving, it is necessary to actively teach young children the importance and value of thoughtful gifts over money-oriented gifts. Our society’s greed for materialistic satisfaction has driven us into a current standing where so many among us can’t afford basic needs anymore.

Sometimes, sad realities are what inspire us to change our ways from striving towards certain materialistic goals to striving towards doing something important with our lives. I feel like every so often I veer off course and get distracted by something shiny.

Sadly, there are enough reminders, quite often too frequently occurring, to bring me back on course. Sad reminders of how short lives can be cut by disease, lives in daily turmoil due to the current economic battle, or seeing the weekly list of deaths from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In retrospect, our very own personal obstacles/problems may seem hollow in the grand perspective of the world. Obviously, we can’t always minimize the magnitude of our own circumstances, but every now and then it is important to reflect on our own lives from a distance.

On that note, I leave you with a simple request, as we round out 2011. Take a moment to reflect on where your personal journey has taken you this year, where it may take you next year, and how—in the midst of your journey—do you impact those around you. What was your imprint?
